Fall 2019 - Listening to Your Church's Voice

The Conference Core Team’s primary work in the coming year is to facilitate a process that will result in a Vision and Strategic Plan for the California-Nevada Conference for the 2021-2024 Quadrennium. This plan will help us direct all the resources of the Conference toward empowering congregations to make disciples of Jesus Christ and to transform life in local and global communities.

In the episcopal visits of this last spring and the listening sessions at this year’s Annual Conference Session, members of the Annual Conference engaged together in conversations that are leading our discernment. We know this is a time of uncertainty in our denomination. Even so, we distinctly heard three values in those conversations that are guiding the ministries and concerns of our local churches:

            Risk-Taking Relationships and Inclusivity

            Healthy and Growth-Inclined Congregations

Effective Leadership (both Lay and Clergy)

Now we are asking: Have we heard you accurately? If the Conference invests substantially in these three values, will it help your local church be more effective in its ministry and discipleship?

This fall will be a season when we are listening to you again during your annual church conferences. Thank you in advance for your willingness to participate in this yearlong visioning process.

Your District Superintendent will provide your team with the directions to respond as a group to the three prompts below. We encourage your church to be honest and clear in what you share, as it will build the foundation of our ministry together through the year 2024. We ask that your church's team submit its responses by December 31, 2019.

*Prompt #1: How would it be helpful to hold up a mirror for your church to see what is really happening in it?

“Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don’t drift along taking everything for granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not mere hearsay, that Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it.” – 2 Corinthians 13:5-6 (The Message)

*Prompt #2: What types of leadership would increase the effectiveness of your church?

“So, my son [Timothy], throw yourself into this work for Christ. Pass on what you heard from me [Paul]—the whole congregation saying Amen!—to reliable leaders who are competent to teach others.” – 2 Timothy 2:1-2 (The Message)

*Prompt #3: Who in your community doesn’t know they are loved? Do you feel a call to love them?

“When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.’” – Matthew 9:36-38 (NRSV)

Please submit by December 31, 2019. The Core Team deeply appreciates the participation of your church!
